Visiting Derinkuyu Underground City

Everything you need to plan a visit to Derinkuyu, the deepest excavated underground city in Cappadocia — opening hours, ticket prices, how long to allow, how to get there, and who should think twice before heading down.

Opening hours

Derinkuyu keeps seasonal hours, and they shift with the Cappadocia daylight. In summer the site stays open later; in winter it closes in the late afternoon. Times can move on public holidays, so treat these as a guide and confirm on the day if you are arriving close to opening or closing.

The quietest time is the first hour after opening, before the Green Tour groups arrive from Göreme and Ürgüp in the late morning. Mid-afternoon in summer is the busiest, and the narrow staircases slow to a shuffle when several groups overlap.

Admission and tickets

Entry costs around 13 euro (roughly US$14) in 2026, paid at the gate. Tickets are sold on site rather than online, so for entry alone there is nothing to book ahead. The Turkey Museum Pass (Müzekart) is accepted and lets pass-holders skip the ticket line. If you are on a guided day tour, check whether the Derinkuyu admission is included in the price or paid separately on arrival — a few tours add it on site.

Card and cash are both usually accepted at the ticket office, but small cash in Turkish lira is worth carrying for the cafés and shops in the town by the entrance.

How long you need

Most visitors spend about an hour to an hour and a half underground. The open route runs down through eight levels and back up the same way, and an hour covers it at a steady pace. Allow longer if you want to linger on the lower levels, read the few information boards, or wait out a crowd on the tighter staircases. Combined tours that pair Derinkuyu with the Ihlara Valley and Selime Monastery fill most of a day, with roughly 45 minutes to two hours actually spent inside the city depending on the operator.

Getting there

Derinkuyu sits in its own town on the Cappadocian plateau, about 30 km south of Nevşehir and roughly 40 km from Göreme.

From Göreme or Ürgüp

By car it is about 40–50 minutes from Göreme on good roads. There is a free car park at the site. Without a car, the simplest option is a Green Tour, the standard southern-Cappadocia day trip, which nearly always includes Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı alongside the Ihlara Valley.

From Nevşehir

Dolmuş minibuses run south from Nevşehir towards Niğde and stop at Derinkuyu; the underground city is a short walk from the centre. A taxi from Nevşehir is quicker if you are short on time.

Accessibility and comfort

Derinkuyu is reached by steep, narrow staircases with low ceilings in places, and the route is one-way with tight passages between levels. It is not wheelchair accessible, and it is a demanding visit for anyone with limited mobility, a heart condition, or back or knee problems — check whether it suits you before you book a tour built around it.

Some passages are low and close, so if you are strongly claustrophobic, know that the tightest stretches are short and the route is lit throughout; taking it slowly and letting faster groups pass helps. The temperature underground holds around 10–15°C all year, noticeably cooler than a Cappadocian summer afternoon, so bring a light layer. Wear flat, grippy shoes: the carved steps can be worn and slightly damp. Carry small children rather than bringing a stroller.

What to bring

A light jacket, comfortable closed shoes, a little cash for the ticket and the town, and a phone or camera that copes with low light — the chambers are dim and flash rarely flatters them. Water is fine to carry, though the visit is short. There are no toilets or shops inside the city, so use the facilities in the town first.
