Inside Derinkuyu: Levels & Engineering
How Derinkuyu was carved, how its eight open levels are arranged, and the ventilation, water and defences that let thousands live below ground.
Carved from volcanic tuff
Everything at Derinkuyu was cut, not built. The Cappadocian bedrock is tuff — compacted volcanic ash soft enough to work with hand tools yet firm enough to hold a ceiling once shaped. The diggers hollowed rooms and connecting passages downward through this rock, carrying the spoil up and out. Because tuff hardens as it dries in air, walls and vaults that were carved damp grew more durable over time. The result is a warren of chambers on multiple levels, linked by stairs and sloping tunnels, reaching about 85 metres below the surface.
The eight open levels
Visitors follow a marked one-way route through eight levels, believed to be roughly a tenth of the complete network. The upper levels, nearest the surface and the fresh air, held the stables and spaces for livestock — practical, since animals are hard to move far down narrow stairs. Below them came storage, kitchens and living quarters, their ceilings darkened by centuries of cooking fires. The deeper you go, the more communal the spaces become, culminating in the rooms read as a church and a school on the lower levels. Arranging the city this way — animals and daily work up top, refuge and worship deep below — kept smoke and smells near the surface and the safest spaces furthest from any breach.
Air and water
Two problems decide whether people can survive underground: breathing and drinking. Derinkuyu solves both. A network of ventilation shafts runs from the surface down through the levels, drawing fresh air to the deepest rooms; the principal shaft descends around 55 metres. Some shafts doubled as wells, reaching water that could be drawn from inside the city and could not be reached — or poisoned — by anyone above. Together they meant a sealed city was not a suffocating one: air circulated and water flowed even with every entrance closed.
Built to be sealed
Derinkuyu’s defining feature is defensive. At intervals along the passages sit large circular stone doors, shaped like millstones, that could be rolled across a tunnel from the inside and pinned in place. A door of this kind could only be moved from within, so attackers could not simply push through. The passages themselves narrow at these points, forcing anyone entering to stoop and go single file — slow, exposed, and easy to stop. Level by level, the city could be closed behind its inhabitants, each stone door buying time and depth.
Why it went so deep
Depth was not a display of ambition; it was the whole point. The further down a refuge reached, the longer it took an attacker to fight through it and the more sealed doors stood between the surface and the people below. Depth also meant a stable climate: the rock holds a steady 10 to 15 degrees whatever the season above, so the lowest levels stayed liveable in the heat of a Cappadocian summer and the cold of its winter. And it kept the water supply and the deepest stores beyond the reach of anyone who broke in near the top. Eighty-five metres is not excess — it is the sum of those advantages, dug one level at a time.
What you can see today
The open route lets you walk past several of the rolling stone doors, look up the ventilation shafts, and stand in the vaulted room described as a church. Signage inside is sparse, which is why many visitors find a guide worthwhile — without one it is easy to pass the school, the presses and the stables without realising what they were. The engineering is the real exhibit: not decoration, but a set of solutions to living underground that still reads clearly a thousand years on.
